Understanding CPA Advertising

CPA stands for Cost Per Acquistion or Cost Per Action. It is now an extremely popular method for advertising online for marketers and is a paid traffic source. CPA marketing can often be confusing for beginners who want to use this paid method but it is not that difficult to understand as this article will explain.

Under the CPA label there are various methods of paying for your action or acquisition. This includes Cost Per Lead, Cost Per Sale and Cost Per Engagement. The nice thing about this method of advertising is that you are not just paying when someone purchases a product or service from you.

Instead you pay when a type of action is performed by the visitor. This can be clicking on a link, filling out a website form, filling out a lead generation form, signing up for a free product or even for a free consultation. What you get them to sign up for is really only limited to your imagination. So if you are creative and can come up with a unique idea your campaigns could deliver exceptional results.

Before setting up a campaign you need to research suitable keywords to use. You will need to set up groups of keywords in what is called Ad Groups. Your main keyword would be something like Coffee and then you would create a list of 5 to 10 related keywords.

So your group would look something like this:

  • Main Word: Coffee
  • Espresso
  • Cappuccino
  • Coffee Mugs
  • Coffee Machines
  • Coffee Coupons

You would then use these keywords to create your ad listing. In this example you may want to create an offer for a free coffee coupon and set up a landing page for it. As visitors click through your advertisement they will be taken to a page where they must complete an action. This action could be signing up for the coupon by giving you their email address, or for liking your Facebook fan page. Once the action has been completed you would then be charged by the company you are using.
